FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions With Our Respite Care Services
We recognise that life can present us with unexpected hurdles, but we firmly believe that with the right support and resources, every challenge can be an opportunity for growth.
Short-Term Accommodation (STA) — now formally called Short-Term Respite (STR) — provides temporary accommodation and support when you or your primary carer need a break. Funding comes from your Core support budget and is designed to keep your usual daily care routines uninterrupted while you stay in a safe, supported environment. A typical stay with ADCS covers:
- 24/7 support: Round-the-clock assistance and supervision from our trained disability support team.
- Accommodation and meals: Comfortable overnight accommodation with daily meals prepared to suit your preferences. (Meals are included as part of our group/centre daily support rate.)
- Personal care: Hands-on help with medication, daily tasks, personal grooming, and your individual health goals.
- Activities and community access: Support to take part in recreation, social activities, and community outings during your stay.
It’s worth knowing what STA/STR funding does not automatically cover: it isn’t a holiday fund, and costs such as activity entry fees, tickets, and transport to and from your stay may need to be funded separately or from other parts of your plan. Our team will confirm exactly what’s covered before you book.
Caring for a loved one is deeply rewarding, but the ongoing physical and emotional demands can lead to fatigue or stress over time. Short-Term Respite gives your primary carer a dedicated window to rest and tend to their own health and wellbeing.
By using planned breaks to recharge, families can reduce the risk of burnout and sustain their caring role over the long term while you enjoy a supported change of environment with the ADCS team.
Under current NDIS guidelines, eligible participants can generally access up to 28 days of funded Short-Term Respite per year, usually booked in blocks of up to 14 days at a time (more on that in the next question). You can use these days flexibly. For example, you might choose several short weekend stays across the year, or a longer block when it suits your family.
ADCS can help you plan accommodation-based respite around your needs, such as:
- Overnight or weekend respite: Brief one- or two-night stays for regular breaks throughout the year.
- Centre-based or group stays: Supported stays in one of our accessible homes.
- Emergency respite: Keeping some capacity available for urgent situations.
A couple of important notes:
- The 28-day limit applies to accommodation-based respite. Other supports, such as in-home assistance or community access, are usually funded separately in your plan, not from your STA/STR days.
- STR is intended to give informal carers (such as family) a break, so eligibility depends on your circumstances and plan. Our intake team works with your support coordinator or plan manager to confirm your eligibility and track usage, so you avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
A common point of confusion is the difference between temporary respite and transitional housing.
Short-Term Respite (STA/STR) is focused on brief, supported breaks (generally up to 14 days at a time and up to 28 days per year) and includes accommodation, meals, personal care, and support to take part in activities, primarily to give carers a break.
Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA) is different. It provides transitional housing for up to 90 days (around three months) when your permanent home isn’t available, for example while you wait for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) or home modifications to be completed. MTA generally covers the accommodation cost only; meals, daily supports, and activities are funded separately through other parts of your plan. It does not include the meals or group activities that form part of an ADCS respite stay.
Because a person-centred approach is at the heart of what we do, respite isn’t one-size-fits-all. Participants can choose from our core delivery formats:
- Centre-based respite: Supported stays in our accessible, community-focused homes.
- In-home respite: Support workers providing care in your own home while your family takes a break.
- Overnight or weekend stays: Short supported stays in our homes across Greater Sydney and the Illawarra.
- Community access respite: Support focused on getting out to social clubs, sport, and local activities.
This range helps us tailor a respite plan that genuinely fits your goals and lifestyle.
Yes. Sudden illness, a medical emergency, or an unexpected breakdown in your usual care arrangements can call for rapid, dependable support, and ADCS offers responsive emergency respite for participants and support coordinators across Sydney.
Our intake team works to assess needs quickly, reviewing relevant medical information and completing a risk profile, so we can arrange a safe placement as fast as practicable. This helps protect the participant from disruption during a difficult time.
Because crisis and emergency accommodation can sometimes fall under separate NDIA or state/territory pathways rather than standard respite funding, our team will help you confirm the right option and funding source.
Creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment is our top priority across all our short-term accommodation homes. Before welcoming someone into a shared stay, our experienced team applies careful compatibility and risk-matching checks:
- Care and clinical matching: Reviewing support needs so on-duty workers have the right training for the care required.
- Age-appropriate grouping: Maintaining distinct arrangements for children, teenagers, and adults.
- Behavioural safety screening: Assessing needs so the home stays calm, safe, and positive for everyone.
- Social compatibility: Grouping participants with shared interests and communication styles to support genuine connection.
This careful matching helps make every respite stay an inclusive, positive experience.
Yes. While group settings can help build social connections, individual needs and preferences are fully supported. If a participant has complex support needs, significant sensory sensitivities, or simply needs a quieter, private space, a 1:1 respite arrangement can be organised where there’s evidence it’s required.
In these cases, ADCS arranges a private room and a dedicated support worker for your stay, so you get the benefit of a calm, low-stimulation environment while still having 24/7 access to personal care, meal support, and medication assistance.
We want short-term respite to feel engaging and enriching: a chance to try new things and build skills, not a clinical placement. Our team supports a varied program based on your interests, which may include:
- Media and downtime: Relaxing in comfortable shared spaces to watch favourite films, sport, or series with peers.
- Sport and recreation: Supported, active sessions to help you stay fit and moving in a safe setting.
- Community outings: Support to visit local parks, landmarks, and community events. (Entry fees, tickets, and transport may be funded separately from your respite supports.)
- Skill-building: Practical activities such as cooking, budgeting, and daily-living skills that build independence.
By focusing on your interests and goals, ADCS helps you get the most from every stay.
Getting started is simple. Our Greater Sydney intake team will help you check your relevant budgets, confirm availability, and tailor a respite plan around your goals and calendar.
Participants, guardians, and support coordinators can arrange a planned or urgent stay by calling 1300 575 740 or submitting an intake request through our online portal. Once your plan details are confirmed, ADCS handles the scheduling so you can focus on a relaxing, well-supported break.
